PROJECT REPORT

The “Post Coronavirus Women Empowerment Project” aims to support vulnerable women and girls in Margibi County, Liberia, who have been adversely affected by the Coronavirus pandemic. These women and girls, often lacking higher education and essential life skills, struggle to improve their living conditions. The pandemic has exacerbated their vulnerability, resulting in a significant number of teenage pregnancies post-quarantine. With many already living in poverty, their living conditions seem to be deteriorating further.

Education and self-empowerment are key in eradicating poverty and alleviating vulnerability, hardship, and poor living conditions. By equipping women and girls with basic life skills, they can gain employment or create and sell their own products. This not only reduces unemployment among women and girls but also enables them to afford daily necessities, thereby renewing their hope for a brighter future. The fundamental skills taught include arts and crafts, soap making, and catering services.

Scope Statement

The project is underway in Margibi, a county located on the north-central coast of Liberia, just an hour’s drive from the capital. It is specifically situated in Mambah-Kaba, District One. The county has an estimated population of 272,255, with 137,267 males and 134,988 females.

MAIN ACCOMPLISHMENTS

The “Post Coronavirus Women Empowerment Project” is active in 10 communities within District One, affecting the lives of 100 vulnerable women and girls. An operational evaluation was recently conducted to assess the impact of the project’s activities on its beneficiaries. The results indicate that 69 participants have become self-employed and possess the necessary skills to apply their training to real-world problem-solving.

ISSUES & RISKS (MAJOR CONSTRAINTS)

The primary challenge encountered in executing this project has been the minimal funding available for implementation. Despite this, the project has been completely funded without any associated costs. Participants have not been charged registration fees, and all materials for classroom instruction and practical exercises have been supplied at no cost to the beneficiaries.
